Malware, virus, adware, you name it infections - Modified 2008-04-16

I get a lot of requests as to what type of antivirus software to use, what malware software to use, how to disinfect your system and on and on. The software section was removed several months back to comply with google's policy. Since the requests for help never really stopped, I'm tossing my two bits up on the internet....

For malware protection, WindowsDefender is primarily what we use to prevent infections. For home based users, we recommend AVG Free. If that URL does not work, then the link has become dead and you will need to snoop around at free.grisoft.com for the free antivirus software. For business clients we recommend NOD32. While AVG Free has the obvious benefit of easy to download, install and use ... all for free, NOD32 has the benefit of being more robust and the combination of NOD32 and WindowsDefender has kept business computers running smoother under our care then any other setup. Norton Antivirus has to be considered the biggest flop in programming history for numerous reasons. From requiring a technician to upgrade (because symantec purposely does not uninstall all of its software and registry entries, leaving a massive trail of garbage behind it, that newer versions cannot get rid of) to the simple problems of installing the software and having your internet disappear. Yes, Norton Antivirus and the rest of the Norton suite has made me quite the penny working for the public. Even though we recommend certain products, people don't care, go out and buy the software we don't recommend, then throw another couple hundred dollars at their computer to have the antivirus software fixed by a technician. Just save yourself the troubles and get software that technicians recommend. Not what an advertisement tells you to get, or what you see on the shelf at a computer store.

Chances are, you will not see a display box of NOD32 even though they do exist. Why? Because they spend more time on developing their software, ensuring it runs smoothly, and ensuring there is no problems with their software then wasting their income on advertising. Word of mouth is their advertising, and it works good when they prove time and again that they have a superior product.

So why then do I recommend AVG Free as well? Because antivirus solutions are not cheap, and while people can get a computer for under $100 these days, there are lower income families that cannot afford a yearly antivirus fee in their budget. AVG Free might not be a superior product, but thats the point. The makers of AVG Free are handing out an adequate product in the hopes that the end user will buy the full featured version.

One last wonderful note;
If you've already ran into the headache of having your computer infected and are lost because of popups, security permissions and other hassles, you can always try the route of a couple free online scans, namely the ones at
TrendMicro.com (Called Housecall)
and the scan at
PandaSoftware.com (Called ActiveScan)
Both scans will check for virii as well as some malware. Once the system has been scanned with these two online scanners, you can always break out Trinity Rescue Kit which is quite the powerful tool and a how to use the software is beyond the scope of this simple writeup. You will need a blank CD, and you boot the computer with TRK and scan away.

Hopefully this will alleviate some people's stress level when it comes to having their computer infected.

Also, because I am always asked; No, WindowsDefender will not conflict with your antivirus software and works quite well with it. WindowsDefender complements antivirus software rather then trying to overpower it like a lot of other solutions out there do.

And one final note as well... Just because you find software that says "antivirus" or "protects against malware" ... usually if it has the word free, its NOT GOOD! Why? because the free portion usually means the software is BUNDLED WITH ADWARE, MALWARE OR VIRII! Seriously! You would not believe how often I have gotten a system with this obscure software that says it protects your computer.... then you do some digging around on the internet and find out that that software is what is causing computer problems.

The first "alpha" version which integrates with the site has been upload and is available as a ZIP or RAR.
Yet another enumeration increase, although not a large one. A nice jump from 511,249 enumerations (About 72GB of parsed drivers) to 520,014 enumerations (About 80GB of parsed drivers). Just to prove some work is being done on the site. Tonight I will probably end up working on the software portion itself and hopefully fire out a test version tonight.

Delays - Modified 2008-03-31

While I did say it would be approximately a week before I released the HADI application, that was before I encountered 2 weeks of a sporadic error with a client that required my immediate and prolonged attention. The problem has been fixed and I intend to keep doing development on the software. In the near future (A week? Maybe 2?) I will have a first release available for download. As always, news regarding it will be posted here.
