PSU to bench power supply version 1

Postby SixOfFive » Mon Mar 23, 2009 6:59 am

Its simple amazing what can be done with some spare parts and some knowledge of electronics. Simply put, here is a frankenstien case, that has been modified to be a bench PSU. At the moment it supplies 12v@12amps and 5v@17amps.

The standby was tied to the hard drive light, and the 5v was tied to the power on led. All in all it was a pretty simple setup.

For those that are curious, http://www.netbump.com/blog/File/How%20to%20Convert%20a%20Computer%20ATX%20Power%20Supply%20to%20a%20Lab%20Power%20Sup...pdf is the reference I used to do the wiring.

After playing with this setup for a week or two, I decided to wire it up more

The cylinder you see in the lower left is a capacitor to ease sudden power drains.

I opted to use crimped wiring rather then just tying the wires on due to the fact they may fall off the terminals and short in the box, which is unacceptable.

Also, after plugging a 45w radio into the bench power supply, the radio powered up fine. However, due to the weakness of the power supply, when I keyed the mic for an extended amount of time, the capacitor drained completely and the power supply 12v line failed (and provided 1v after that). The PSU to bench power supply version 2 will be a dual PSU setup with some additional circuitry.
